Bernard Buffet and cars

Superb paintings of old cars by BERNARD BUFFET

Above all, Bernard Buffet is known for his clowns and the thin line drawing figures he created in the 1950s

What is not particularly well-known about him is that he was a lover of fine houses and cars.

When he was 28 years old, Buffet had a Rolls-Royce. He was equally devoted to old cars and more recent models. The neighbours he had when he lived in rue de Wagram remember the Range Rover that he loved to drive when he went to the Sologne region (Buffet was also a hunting enthusiast…).

In 1952, Buffet started putting on annual exhibitions on certain themes with the only picture-dealer he ever had – Maurice Garnier.

His 1985 exhibition was all about cars. From Jaguars and Porsches to 4CVs – these car "portraits" reveal one of the artist’s true passions and shed new light on one of the masters of 20th-century figurative art.
